Chapter synopsis: Waste management is an essential component of an egg production system, affecting the environmental impact of production, food safety, worker safety, and animal health and safety. Manure, animal mortalities , and egg washing and processing wastewater are the major types of waste generated in an egg production facility. In this chapter, the characteristics of manure, poultry mortality and egg washing wastewater are discussed. Various methods and technologies for treating and managing these waste streams are then presented, including anaerobic digestion, aerobic treatments and thermochemical processes. The application of poultry waste products as fertilizer is also considered.
