Chapter synopsis:

Concerns over the indiscriminate use of antimicrobials (AMU) have led to the growth of antibiotic-free broiler (AFB) production. This chapter will attempt to highlight emerging challenges and opportunities for achieving AFB production. Given the enormous public health risks of indiscriminate AMU, it is plausible that AFB production will continue to define the industry trends for consumer preferences, regulatory initiatives, and marketing. Consequently, managing gut health is an emerging frontier for advancing AFB production. Efficacious dietary strategies with consistent responses and measurable returns on investment are the next frontier for ABF production. In tandem, effective vaccines will be pivotal in tackling necrotic enteritis and colibacillosis; the leading enteric diseases associated with ABF production. Finally, adjustments in farm management practices, biosecurity measures, and the integration of the broiler breeder and hatchery interfaces will be pivotal in advancing AFB production to the next level
