Chapter synopsis:

This chapter examines different processing techniques that make alternative animal feed options available. There are multiple processing techniques, but there are two major divisions: heated and non-heated techniques. Some examples of the different techniques used in alternative feed are extruding, de-watering and drying. Extruding involves pressure and heat to create toxin-free ribbon-like products that can be fed to animals. De-watering involves solid-state fermentation techniques to create animal feed. Drying occurs when animal feed is powdered and dried to allow for greater storability. Drying general occurs after the de-watering stage. These techniques are described in detail. The chapter also explores how processing techniques can be used to increase nutritional value in animal feed. It also includes a case study that evaluated protein demands using ethanol plant-derived co-products, provides future trends in research and identifies resources where to look for further information.
