Chapter synopsis:

This chapter describes the use of oats and oat co products in animal feeds, along with potential for utilising these local crops as effectively as possible. Maximising the use of all parts of the crop can make the production of animals more sustainable, both economically and environmentally. After describing the growing and use of oats, the potential co-products will be discussed along with their use for different animal species. This chapter will also include two case studies where investigations into oat co-products have shown potential for use in broiler feed. Appropriate processing of oats and their co-products can minimise any disadvantages of inclusion in animal feed, and can ensure they are utilised effectively.
