Chapter synopsis:

This chapter describes the concept of Internet of Things and its components. Data processing and exchange is put into a historic perspective in the Dutch and Flanders perspective. History covers the decades since the eighties. The identified periods include the Dutch national Informatics National Stimulation Program (INSP) initiative in the eighties and nineties, stand-alone (sensor) application development in the noughties, cloud solutions and upcome IoT in the teenies, and the upcome of data platforms and data spaces in the twenties. Key aspects such as technology developments, FAIR data principles, cooperation between organizations, BigData and protecting ownership of data by farmers are discussed. A case study describes the background of two key organizations in data exchange, JoinData from the Netherlands and DjustConnect from Flanders. Future trends show the influence of the digital stratgey of the EU and its activities towards the creation of the Common European Agricultural Data Space.
