Chapter synopsis: Surface irrigation has long been an important tool for farmers. This chapter will review the development of surface irrigation techniques. Section 2 provides a brief historical overview, and then Sections 3 and 4 consider the development of furrow, basin and border irrigation in detail. Sections 5 and 6 cover irrigation scheduling and efficiency, Section 7 reviews the many factors which play into the choice of an irrigation system and, finally, Section 8 discusses modelling of surface irrigation systems.
