Chapter synopsis:

This chapter aims to discuss the advantages and limits of enzyme assays used as proxies for nutrient availability in soil and as indicators of soil health. The chapter also discusses the complexity of interpreting soil enzyme activities. It underlines research shortcomings and proposes future research lines that will address some of the current knowledge gaps. Finally, the chapter proposes further studies to improve the use of enzyme activities as indicators of soil health.
