Chapter synopsis: Genetic modifications are a well-known mechanism for understanding the evolution of weeds and invasive alien plants. Recently more attention has been given to epigenetic modifications in weed ecological genetics since epigenetic modifications can govern the ecological-adaptive potential of weed species. The chapter starts by discussing the role of genetic modifications before focusing on epigenetic modifications to illustrate the importance of epigenetics in understanding invasiveness and weediness.
