Chapter synopsis: The continent of Africa accounts for 25% of the world’s arable land and yet produces just 10% of the global agricultural output. Against the backdrop of the challenges to agriculture in Africa, the African heads of states took a decision in 2011 to integrate organic agriculture into the mainstream agricultural systems of all member states by the year 2020. This chapter describes the current status of organic agriculture in Africa and sets out steps that need to be followed to improve organic agriculture in the continent, from advocacy to improved agricultural techniques and greater government investment.
