Chapter synopsis: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool for evaluating the environmental impact of a product or process throughout its entire life cycle. This chapter reviews the application of LCA methodology to assess the environmental impact of the production of crude palm oil (CPO), including the impact of land-use change from logged-over forest to oil palm production. It assesses ways of mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from oil palm cultivation such as ways of reducing methane and the use of biogas capture technologies.
