Bacterial and viral diseases affecting soybean production

Chapter synopsis: Pathogens of soybean include bacteria, fungi, nematodes, oomycetes, parasitic plants and viruses. Losses due to diseases are estimated to be about 14% of total soybean production. In this chapter, we review bacterial blight, pustule, tan spot and wilt, as well as a few other bacterial diseases affecting soybean. We then discuss a few of the viral diseases of soybean, namely alfalfa mosaic virus, bean pod mottle virus, soybean mosaic virus, soybean vein necrosis virus, tobacco ringspot virus and tobacco streak virus. We also consider how the impact of bacterial and viral pathogens can be decreased through management practices such as crop rotation, utilization of pathogen-free seed, better use of synthetic and non-synthetic pesticides for vector control and deployment of cultivars with resistance.
