Chapter synopsis: This chapter describes advances in the breeding of disease-resistant varieties of oil palm, presenting the key issues associated with oil palm disease resistance, including the usefulness and sustainability of resistance and the agricultural practices required to enable it. The chapter focusses on the achievement of resistance to three major diseases of oil palm: Fusarium wilt, Ganoderma basal/upper stem rot and bud rot. The chapter looks ahead to potential future developments in the field of oil palm disease resistance.
