Chapter synopsis: At the beginning of the 20th century, oil palm was a semi-wild crop which had not been subjected to breeding efforts. This chapter will review the history of oil palm breeding, starting from the beginning of the 20th century up to the present day. We will discuss breeding objectives, breeding methods and data collection methods currently in use, and will then review the impacts and progress of oil palm breeding programs. Finally, we will consider seed production and future trends in oil palm breeding.
