Chapter synopsis: Mango (Mangifera indica L.) and closely related genera (Mangifera spp.) belong to the family Anacardiaceae that consists of dicotyledonous trees and shrubs. The mango is distributed widely in the world’s tropical and subtropical regions as well as in a wide range of areas with a marginal climate throughout the world. The cultivated mango is probably a natural hybrid between M. indica and M. sylvatica that occurred in south eastern Asia to India. On the basis of ancient accounts of travellers and written historical records, it was believed for many years that mango must have originated from India and spread outward from Southeast Asia.
