Chapter synopsis: The coconut, Cocos nucifera L. was once the most important palm crop in the humid tropics. After an introduction to the current extent of coconut cultivation and uses, this chapter discusses the origins and botany of coconut. It then reviews available genetic resources. The chapter goes on to review conventional breeding techniques such as mass selection and hybridization before discussing developments in molecular breeding techniques for coconut.
