Chapter synopsis: Disease and pest-resistant cultivars can significantly contribute to sustainable and resilient cultivation of apples. In this chapter, we review the development of apples that are resistant to a number of important diseases, including apple scab, powdery mildew, fire blight, nectria canker and Marssonina apple blotch. We also briefly consider the development of apples which are resistant to pests, before discussing DNA-based selection techniques for developing resistance and the mechanisms on which resistance depends.
