Chapter synopsis: Conservation tillage (CT) is one among the prominent agronomic innovations proposed to address stagnant wheat yields in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia. A review of recent literature and an analysis of farm household datasets indicate that the magnitude of economic impact of CT wheat, albeit being generally positive, varies widely across the region. The technology is yet to become popular among the smallholders, the diffusion constraints being system- and location-specific. This chapter highlights the relevance of locally adapted CT practices and related scaling pathways to address the prevailing diffusion constraints in the diverse agro-climatic and socio-economic settings of the heterogeneous farming community.
