Chapter synopsis: Global food production must increase in order to meet the needs of the world’s growing population. In order to improve productivity in rice cultivation, it is essential to recognize the problems caused by biological constraints such as weeds, and then to evolve and implement appropriate strategies to alleviate these problems. In this chapter, we review the problem of weeds in rice crops and the need for integrated weed management (IWM) to address this issue. After a brief overview of the IWM approach and its advantages, three sections offer a detailed discussion of the wide variety of techniques which may be incorporated into an IWM strategy. We then review examples of how these techniques can be combined and integrated, and offer recommendations for future IWM research.
