It then takes a step back to review the broader context into which PLF fits, reviewing trends in livestock production, the increasingly complex challenges it faces as well as those related to understanding animals as highly-complex systems. It then provides an overview of developments in differing PLF technologies in addressing this width of challenges before assessing the issue of uptake of PLF technologies. The chapter aims to show the opportunities PLF offers to the animal production sector in offering solutions for the major challenges it faces.
