Chapter synopsis: In the past few decades, there has been a continuous drive towards the development and adoption of larger, and more powerful, agricultural machinery. Larger machinery is often related with timeliness, higher work rates and lower labour requirements, which has led to significant improvements both in efficiency and productivity, but a drawback of this trend has been the associated increase in machinery weight. This chapter defines and outlines the requirements of controlled traffic farming systems, examines the sustainability of controlled traffic farming and examines the feasibility of coupling controlled traffic farming with precision agriculture.
