Chapter synopsis:

This chapter explores ways of optimizing environmental control of cultivation rooms (CRs) in next-generation plant factories. After considering design issues for CRs, the chapter focuses on measurement, analysis and control of three-dimensional (3D) distributions of environmental variables within a leaf canopy and root zone of a plant community in a CR. As the chapter shows, major productivity improvements can be achieved by optimally controlling the 3D environment and the interaction of the environment with the phenotype.
