Chapter synopsis:

This chapter brings an Australian perspective to the discussion of women smallholder farmers. It highlights that increasing climate induced disasters are having significant impacts on farmers across Australia with major consequences particularly on smaller farms. Assessing the impacts on women on smallholder farms in Australia is difficult because of a lack of public accounting, a dominance of patrilineal inheritance practices and the expectations on women in farming families to work on and off the farm. The chapter introduce insights from a study of women who have won national agricultural leadership awards for their work in agriculture noting the ongoing gender politics that pervades Australian agriculture.
