This chapter discusses improving agri-food supply chains in North America, using the case of the sugarcane agro-industry in Mexico as a discussion point. The chapter focuses on sugarcane production in Mexico, then goes on to highlight factors determining the competitiveness of the sugarcane agro-industry. A section on the main technological issues related to sugarcane agri-business development is also included, followed by an overview of the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on sugarcane agri-business development. Regulatory issues related to sugarcane agri-business development are also highlighted and labour issues relating to sugarcane agri-business development are discussed as well. The chapter goes on to review pricing issues in the sugarcane industry, which is then followed by a review of the role of diversification and financing in sugarcane agri-business development.
