The biological and chemical processes that drive N₂O emissions from agricultural systems are well-established, but these processes are influenced by numerous spatially and temporally variable factors. As a result, the effectiveness of N2O mitigation strategies varies across different soil, climate, land-use and land-management conditions. This chapter provides a comprehensive summary of strategies for reducing agricultural N₂O emissions. It evaluates the efficacy of current mitigation options across key agricultural systems—including cropping, rice, agroforestry and livestock systems—and discusses the future research focus for new mitigation strategies.
