Supporting sustainable agriculture through the provision of trusted knowledge
When Rob and Francis founded Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing in 2015, they had a clear vision for the company and opted to focus the publishing programme on sustainable agriculture.
This decision was made following reports published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which identified agriculture as a significant contributor to global warming and climate change.
As a result, the agricultural sector faced immediate pressure to reduce its environmental impact, namely through minimising its use of chemical inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides. However, without the use of chemical inputs, concerns arose surrounding whether the sector was equipped to deal with the global demand for food in the face of a rapidly growing population.
For many, it was at this crossroads that the sustainable agriculture movement truly gained momentum.
What is sustainable agriculture?
"It is farming that meets the needs of existing and future generations, while also ensuring profitability, environmental health and social and economic equity. It favours techniques that emulate nature–to preserve soil fertility, prevent water pollution and protect biodiversity. It is also a way to support the achievement of global objectives, like the Sustainable Development Goals and Zero Hunger." (United Nations Environment Programme)
